They have won the home court advantage for the semi finals of the Sussex League Playoffs to be held in May. Great achievement for a side still in development with 6 new players this season!

Hoop and Glory at Henfield

Phew, what a fantastic first meeting of this year’s Horsham District Primary Schools Basketball League at Henfield Leisure Centre – 8 schools, 13 teams, 3 courts, over 50 players involved, 22 matches and 632 points scored but who’s counting?!

For this first meeting the teams were split randomly into three groups to compete to see which division they would feed into for the second meeting to be held at Collyer’s, Horsham on Thursday 13th February.

Southwater A started strongly with a 20-4 win over Greenway B in Group A but as the night wore on it was clear balance of power rested between the St Peter’s, Henfield and Slinfold teams. The two’s initial encounter finished in an exciting 18 all draw, the only tied match of the night, although some others went to the wire. As they proceeded to win their other matches top position came down to points scoring difference which Slinfold shaded courtesy of their superior firepower providing a bigger contribution to the margin than St Peter’s’ superior defensive record.

Group B did not need reference to goal difference mathematics; Shelley dominated with convincing wins scoring, 20, 40 and 50 points in their three matches. Clearly they like dealing in round numbers! Their players were physically strong, demonstrated good teamwork and were deadly in putting the ball away especially in lay up mode. Windmill School battled gamely against them to keep the score in more respectable territory and then proceeded to win tight matches against Southwater B and local rivals St Peter’s Heat A to secure second spot. Southwater B’s 14-10 win over St Peter’s saw them into third.

Five teams battled it out in Group C and Greenway A always looked in the driving seat to win it with confident victories in all its games and racking up over a century of points scored in the process. Holbrook took the runners-up spot mainly thanks to a 16-12 win over third placed Bilingshurst. St Peter’s Heat B and Southwater C brought up the fourth and fifth rear respectively but will take comfort from being competitive between each other and in their games with Billingshurst.

Thanks go to Charlotte and John Curran for doing a fantastic job of reffing two of the three courts for the whole time through, no mean feat when keeping up with lots of super sharp youngsters!

With the teams set to be more evenly matched into divisions in the next meetings there is lots of excitement to come.
